What is CARCAM?

CARCAM offers an outreach model beginning in the secondary system to attract, enroll, and graduate a diverse population of students in manufacturing careers. This provides the region's next generation of manufacturing employees with the skills in automated control systems, robotics, and mechatronics systems essential to the future of automotive and automated industry manufacturing. Graduates of programs in automated manufacturing technology as well as related program options will have a significant advantage over other job seekers due to the accomplishment of obtaining a multi-skilled technician degree and heightening their employability in a variety of industries. Faculty members from the member colleges, working in conjunction with faculty from existing NSF Centers and projects, bring together significant experience and expertise in curriculum and instructional delivery.

CARCAM Addresses Workplace Diversity

CARCAM works with industry to prepare technicians who reflect the diverse populations of its communities. These efforts focus on women and on under-represented minorities. Female technicians may still be outnumbered in some facilities by as much as 50 to 1, but the women who have completed CARCAM programs are very successful. The center works with national experts to address the shortage of women technicians and to promote female student success.

CARCAM Develops Courses with Ongoing Industry Input

Whether it is tool and die maintenance at Honda of America Manufacturing, Inc., composite materials at Hyundai Motor America, or advanced machining with automotive supplier firms, CARCAM colleges work with industry leaders to develop and redesign community college workforce education for today’s globally competitive environment. With advice from Alabama’s leading automotive manufacturers and suppliers, the center’s staff continually reviews courses for automotive manufacturing technician degree programs and ensures that CARCAM colleges’ curricula meet industry needs.

CARCAM Leverages Other Partnerships

The center engages with other partnerships to share best practices and advance automotive education in other regions. It works with Alabama Industrial Development Training, an industry leader in education for start-up companies, and the Alabama Technology Network, which addresses the ongoing education needs of Alabama’s companies. CARCAM also collaborates with the Automotive Manufacturing Technical Education Collaborative—a large ATE project that includes 14 community college partners in eight states— to address multistate automotive technician education issues. The center engages with other partnerships to share best practices and advance automotive education in other regions.

CARCAM is one of the fourteen community and technical colleges in the Southeast that are participating in the Multi-State Advanced Manufacturing Consortium (MS-AMC) grant. The grant’s mission is to improve manufacturing education to better align with industry and student requirements with a focus on three manufacturing industries – process, automotive/transportation, and aerospace/parts and precision manufacturing. Leveraging the expertise of their industrial partners and building upon successful processes developed over the past few years, the college members of this consortium are committed to bridging the disconnect and transforming the face of manufacturing education in their institutions.
