Production accelerates at Hyundai plant

Montgomery workers built more Hyundai cars in March than any time since last October, the plant announced Monday.

Plant production hit 34,330 as the assembly plant works to keep up with demand in a hot car-buying season. The company's two best-selling models in North America are made in Montgomery.

The plant set its all-time record by producing 37,137 Sonata and Elantra sedans in October. Its production numbers have increased each month since falling to 29,303 during December, when workers took a break for the holidays.

The line normally rolls out cars around the clock on weekdays, and workers will keep it going one Saturday this month to help feed a surprisingly strong spring at dealerships.

Hyundai broke its North American sales record in March, even as the pace of sales growth slowed for other automakers. Despite that, the company has said it must expand production capacity to keep pace with the rest of the industry over the long term.
