NACC Machine Tool Program Receives Grant—Scholarships Are Available

Northeast Alabama Community College recently received a $25,000 grant from the Gene Haas Foundation to support scholarships for the Machine Tool Technology (MTT) program. The check was presented to MTT program instructor, Hugo DeAngelis at the 2016 Haas Automation, Inc. Manufacturing Day event, held at the Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, Alabama. While at the event, students were able to meet with potential employers and attend demonstrations of newly released equipment.

“I would like to express my appreciation to Haas Automations and the Gene Haas Foundation for its support of the NACC Machine Tool Program and its students,” said Hugo DeAngelis, MTT instructor/advisor.

The Gene Haas Machine Tool scholarship was established by the Gene Haas Foundation to support the education of students in Machine Tool Technology. This scholarship is for graduating high school seniors with a 75 or higher GPA or incoming freshmen with a 2.5 or higher GPA planning to pursue a Machine Tool Technology major. Scholarship applications are available at the Admissions Office or from instructor/advisor DeAngelis. Completed applications must be sent to Dean Sherie Grace, Scholarship Chairperson, in the Admissions Office. The deadline to apply is December 1 by 4:30 pm. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered. Applicants may be called in for a personal interview. Scholarship students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

The Machine Tool Technology Program at NACC offers classes on campus in its state-of-the-art Industrial Systems Technology Building. Training is done in both manual and Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machining, modern computer aided manufacturing design software, and state-of-the-art instructional technology.

Graduates of the machine tool technology program at NACC can design, prototype, and build parts, all while maintaining the machines and assuring safety in the shop environment. This challenging program prepares students for all aspects of machine tool technology, including design, CNC programming, troubleshooting, advanced manufacturing, and creating innovative solutions.

There is a 20% projected growth in job positions for machinists in Alabama through 2022. The median hourly wage for a machinist in Alabama is approximately $19 (America’s CareerInfoNet, 2015). Earnings vary based on experience, education, and location.

NACC offers a Short-Term Certificate in Machine Tool Technology (MTT) and an Associate in Applied Science and Certificate Options in Industrial Systems Technology. New students are accepted into the program each semester.

Early registration for the Machine Tool Technology Program for the 2017 spring semester is underway. Register now by appointment. Regular registration is Wednesday, January 4, 2017, 8:30 am until 5:30 pm. Classes begin on Thursday, January 5.
